Coach Mike Stump’s CCHS team will compete in the 51st annual Little Kanawha Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Ritchie County High School.

The Red Devils have been state title contenders several times since the program was expanded in 1980-81. That includes 25 top 10 finishes in the state tournament, with 12 top four finishes and four runner up trophies.

Showing how tough the competition was in the LKC, Calhoun did not win a conference title until 2002. Over a nine-year period, the team won eight championships, the last coming in 2010.

Before that streak, the Red Devils were runner up in the conference eight times.

Wirt County has claimed 14 titles since the LKC began having conference championships, while Spencer and Williams-town are tied with CCHS at eight each.

That gives those four teams 38 of the previous 50 titles of the 21 teams that have competed.

Thirteen teams are scheduled to be at Ellenboro on Saturday. In addition to Calhoun and host Ritchie, there will be Braxton, Clay, Doddridge, Ravenswood, Roane, St. Marys, South Harrison, Tyler Consolidated, Webster, Williamstown and Wirt.

Those teams have over 35 wrestlers among the top 10 in the state in the Jan. 29’s Class AA-A rankings.

A preview of the LKC’s 14 weight classes and Calhoun’s entries are as follows:

106 lbs. - Allen Metheney (39-4, freshman) is ranked second. Also in the class are Jack Cummings (third, Clay), Jacob Spencer (fourth, Roane) and Cody Marks (seventh, Wirt).
