Is it just me or are there more gardens in our area this
year? It seems that as we ride around on our various errands, we see a
new garden or an established garden that has been enlarged.
I don’t know if it is the price of veggies at the store
or the economy, but every little bit helps. Let’s put it this way--it
sure couldn’t hurt. Every year that Frank and I have been married, we
have had a garden. With six children at home, the garden was a half of
an acre and everything from asparagus to zucchini was grown.
As the children left, the garden got smaller, but there
was always a garden. The first year that we moved here, we had a small
garden and we have had one ever since. I haven’t bought store potatoes
for 36 years. I have saved so much money over the years by freezing and
cooking our own vegetables and storing our own onions and potatoes.
My budget has always been tight and our garden just
loosens it a little bit. We always grow potatoes, peppers, tomatoes,
onions and zucchini, and this year we added spinach, carrots and beets.
We now have one of those established gardens that just got bigger. Think
money saved.
Thought for the month: Have a happy and safe 4th of
July.
