Jail and Bail
Calhoun Christmas Connection's Jail and Bail
fundraiser on Aug. 18 raised $1,742 for purchase of toys for Calhoun
children. There were 20 people arrested. Jean Simers said, "The people
who were arrested were great sports. We arrested Elah Whisman and Elah
said she was 94 and had never been arrested. Also, John Lowther,
preacher at Knotts Memorial U.M. Church, was detained with his bail set
at $100. He called several people and raised $200." Loretta Propst,
whose bail was also $100, raised $150. It was also the first arrest for
Mary Louise Smith. The group expressed thanks to John Oshoway
as judge, Anne Smith and Duke Bowman as bailiff, those arrested,
and those who helped "bail out" the criminals. Left to right, seated,
are David Bugby, Judy Powell, Judy Bowman; standing, Jean Simers, Sam
Cason, Barb McKown, Curt Garretson, Emily Gainer, Anne Smith, Carol
Sloane and Duke Bowman.
