A pair of Class AA-A teams dominated a
predominately AAA field at the Brooke Classic last week.
Oak Glen, ranked first in AA-A, and Calhoun, ranked
third, scored 299 and 248.5 points, respectively, to finish one-two.
John Marshall was third of the 11 teams competing with 214 points.
Competition began on Friday with wrestlers divided
into two or three pools for each of the 14 weight classes.
Fielding 11 matmen, Calhoun won all eight of its
pools from 140 to 285 lbs., and finished with 58.5 points. Oak Glen and
John Marshall each scored 61 points.
Those points were added to Saturday’s bracketed
tournament results.
The Red Devils had nine wrestlers place in the top
four of their weight class on Saturday.

Junior Zach Hanshaw, 145 lbs., uses a figure-four to register
a pin against a Brooke wrestler.

Senior Aaron Yoak, 171 lbs., takes an Independence wrestler to his
back using a cradle. Yoak registered five wins, all by pin, during
Friday and Saturday’s tournament. He now has 101 individual wins during
his high school career.

Tim Sutro scores back points with a cradle against an Edison
wrestler in the 189 lb. consolation finals. The CHS senior was 2-0 on
Friday, took his ACT college entrance exam on Saturday morning, and lost
his first match in the afternoon. He rebounded with four straight wins
to place third at Brooke.
Championships were won by seniors Cody Clark (140
lbs.) and Aaron Yoak (171).
During the two days, both were 5-0. Yoak pinned all
five opponents and scored 34 points. Clark had three pins and totaled 29
points.
Placing second were juniors Ben Laughlin (152) and
Caden Arnold (215) and freshman Jared Haught (160). It was the first
loss for Laughlin since he was a freshman. He was 33-0 and state
champion at 145 lbs. last year.
In third were sophomore Seth Wease (135), junior
Zach Hanshaw (145) and senior Tim Sutro (189). Aaron Dawson-Jarvis, a
junior, was fourth.
Also competing were freshman Levi Gordon and senior
Christian Cottrell.
Calhoun will participate in the Jason Eades
Memorial at Pt. Pleasant High School on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19.
Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. each day.
Wrestling
notes: Aaron Yoak became the 27th CHS
wrestler to reach 100 career wins. His 5-0 record at Brooke gives him
101. Paul Goodrich, who finished his career in 2006, has the school
record with 165.
Cody Clark is the only other current Red Devil
wrestler over the 100 mark. Adding in results at Brooke, he is tied for
12th in wins (123), 8th in pins (82), and 8th in points scored (839).
Goodrich and Jeff Morris are tied for the school
record in pins with 102, while Goodrich also holds the career scoring
mark with 1,076.5. Clark entered the season on pace to eclipse both
records.
Tim Sutro (78), Ben Laughlin (75) and Caden Arnold
(69) are next in line for 100.
State qualifier Austin Moore is vying for a spot in
the CHS line up this week.
