The Calhoun High School football team improved its
record to 4-2 last Friday night with an exciting 39-32 win at South
Harrison.
Although the Red Devil defense gave up 237 yards
and three touchdowns in the first half, the offense kept up with the
Hawks’ output with the aid of four Zach Moore to Bronson Clark pass
completions.
South Harrison scored the only TD of the first
quarter on a 10 yard run, but came up short on the first of four
two-point conversions it would miss.
CHS
needed five plays to start the second period with a successful 70-yard
drive. A pair of Moore-to-Clark connections (40 and 18 yards), the
second one in the endzone, tied the score..
SH came back with a five-play, 58-yard drive with
7:57 left in the half.
Calhoun answered again.
A Clark reception of 47 yards to the three, set up
a four-yard touchdown by Moore, whose
extra point kick gave the team its first lead, 13-12.
South Harrison responded with a successful 10-play,
76-yard drive that ended with a successful TD run from the 10. A
two-point conversion pass gave the Hawks a 20-13 margin with 1:37 on the
clock.
The Red Devils got help from the SH defense on two
pass interference calls that moved the ensuring possession into Hawk
territory. On the next play, Moore found Clark in the open down the left
side for a 44-yard touchdown. Randy Fluharty’s two-point conversion gave
Calhoun a 21-20 edge at halftime.
The lead was short-lived as South Harrison needed
just three plays to go 75 yards to open the third quarter and take a
26-21 lead.
Calhoun answered again.
Darrenger Fluharty took the kickoff at his own 14,
broke two tackles at the 31 and went the rest of the way untouched.
Brother Randy added the two extra points as
CHS went up, 29-26, just 1:24 into the period.
Playing the first half on a wet field, the teams
had yet to commit a turnover.
A steady rain began midway through the third
quarter, and the two teams combined for eight fumbles in the second
half. Calhoun kept control of its three miscues, but the Hawks lost four
of its five.
Just after a downpour began, South scored its fifth
TD on a four-yard run with 35 seconds left in the third.
With the help of a Hawk fumble on a muffed punt
return, Calhoun kept the ball for 12 plays before punting to the South
Harrison 11.
The CHS
defense held--and facing a 4th-and-seven at its own 14--the Hawks
elected to take an intentional safety to keep the lead, 32-31, with 6:25
left in the game.
South Harrison’s free kick gave the Red Devils
possession at the Hawks’ 48.
Having gained only one first down and 12 yards
rushing in the second half, the Red Devils kept the ball on the ground.
Ten carries and three first downs left CHS
at the 15.
On the next play, Randy Fluharty carried around the
left side to paydirt. He added his third two-pointer of the game as
Calhoun went up, 39-32, with 1:06 remaining.
South Harrison returned the last kickoff to the CHS 44, but two penalties and a 15-yard loss left
the team with a 3rd-and-44. Derrick Hardbarger recovered a fumbled pass
reception to guarantee the Calhoun win.
Season statistics will be published next week.
Calhoun, which moved up to 15th in WVSSAC ratings,
is off this week. The Red Devils travel to Roane County on Friday, Oct.
16, at 7:30 p.m.
