Friday’s varsity football game against Braxton
County has been moved to Glenville State College’s Morris Stadium. Game
time is 7:30 p.m.
Calhoun, 4-4 after a 45-38 loss to visiting Wirt
County last Friday, dropped two places to 21st in Class A WVSSAC
rankings. It was the fourth loss in five games for the Red Devils.
CHS
needs the 13 ratings points it would get with a win over the Eagles to
keep alive its slim chances of qualifying for the playoffs for the
fourth time in five years.
Braxton, which began the season with four wins, has
lost its last five games. It is ranked 22nd in Class AA.
Calhoun closes its regular season next week by
hosting St. Marys, which will probably enter the contest on a seven-game
losing streak and would provide only eight ratings points for a
CHS
victory.
Last Friday, Aaron Yoak spotted the Red Devils a
6-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage by returning an interception
19 yards.
Wirt answered with a 15-play drive that covered 70
yards, but came up inches short on fourth down at the two.
Fumbles, something that has plagued Calhoun all
season, led directly to three of the Tigers’ five touchdowns in the
first half. Those turnovers and 168 yards in passing gave Wirt a 33-6
lead.
The visitors expanded that lead to 39-6 on their
first series of the second half, helped out by another five completions
for 73 yards.
Calhoun scored on four of its next five possessions
and added two-point conversions after each, but Wirt’s 13-play, 55-yard
scoring drive came after the Red Devils had scored 24 of those
unanswered points.
The drive gave the Tigers a 45-30 lead with 5:34
remaining.
CHS
answered with its fourth touchdown of the half, a 12-yard run by
quarterback Zach Moore and Randy Fluharty’s third two-point conversion
with 2:10 left.
An onside kick failed, and Wirt ran out the clock
for a 45-38 win.
The previous three TDs in the half for Calhoun were
scored on a 17-yard pass from Moore to Preston Milan, Moore’s 40-yard
run, and Randy Fluharty’s five-yard score.
Calhoun was led in rushing by Moore (9-67) and
Fluharty (11-65). The defense was led in tackles by Darrenger Fluharty
(12) and Ben Laughlin (11).
Calhoun will go after its fifth win against Braxton
County on Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Glenville State College.
