It was a dreary night--and it also sprinkled some
rain drops on Calhoun’s pride.
The CHS
varsity football team lost at Williamstown last Friday night, 65-22.
It was only the second time in school history that
a team has scored more than 59 points against a Calhoun varsity football
team.
The first time was on Oct. 1, 1938, when CHS lost to Parkersburg High School, 67-0.
The good news: Calhoun ended the 1938 season with a
winning record of 7-4.
For the Red Devils to complete a successful season
in 2009, it will take an effort like the 2008 squad performed.
Calhoun was 3-2 at this point in the season last
year, and won its next four games. Those four opponents are the same,
but all four may have improved since 2008.
CHS,
which dropped to 18th in the WVSSAC ratings, will play at South Harrison
(4-1 and ranked 16th) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.`
At Williamstown, the hosts scored on their first
five possessions, stopping themselves on the sixth with a missed 39-yard
field goal as the first half ended.
The only times the defense stopped the
Yellowjackets in the second half were when Justin Gerwig intercepted a
pass in the third quarter, and when Aaron Yoak returned a fumble 49
yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth period.
Calhoun’s other TDs came on a two-yard run by Cory
Metz in the second quarter and a three-yard run by Daniel Sims in the
fourth.
Zach Moore completed eight of 16 passes for 75
yards. Randy Fluharty was held to 33 yards on 11 carries.
Aaron Yoak led the team in tackles with 11,
followed by Darrenger Fluharty with nine.
