After giving up the go ahead touchdown with two minutes left in the game, it looked like the CHS varsity football team’s attempt to put together its first streak of five winning seasons since 1981-1985 was over.

Leading 12-7, St. Marys’ ensuing kickoff was returned 15 yards to the Red Devil 39 by Randy Fluharty.

CHS had 1:54 to go 61 yards.

Utilizing its timeouts and the sidelines to stop the clock, Calhoun moved to a 1st-and-goal at the Blue Devils’ five in nine plays.

Eighteen seconds remained.

Highlights of the drive were a 12-yard pick up by quarterback Zach Moore, a Moore-to-Fluharty 15-yard pass, and a 15-yard gain by Darrenger Fluharty.

An incomplete pass and a yard loss forced CHS coach Doyle Hupp to use his final timeout with 11 seconds left.

Moore threw over the middle to Aaron Yoak, who caught the ball just inside the end zone for the winning touchdown. Moore added the extra point with 5.7 seconds on the clock for a 14-12 victory and a 6-4 record.

Calhoun won the turnover battle for one of the few times this season.

The Red Devils moved the ball in the first quarter, but fumbles ended two threats. In the second period, CHS was held to a net of four yards.

The visiting Blue Devils were stymied by four turnovers in the first half. The Calhoun defense got fumble recoveries by Moore and Cory Metz, and interceptions by Bronson Clark and Justin Gerwig.

St. Marys went ahead, 6-0, after a 13-play, 80-yard drive ended on a 17-yard run with 2:20 left in the first half. Metz blocked the extra point attempt.

The Red Devils looked inspired when they opened the second half.

Led by the Fluharty brothers, Calhoun used up nearly half the third quarter on its initial possession. After 11 plays, the team had gained 59 yards and a first down at the three. The team’s third fumble--and last of the season--ended the drive.

Five plays later, Calhoun took the lead when Randy Fluharty wrested the ball away from a St. Marys running back and returned it 26 yards for the 15th touchdown of his senior season. Moore’s kick put the team up, 7-6, with 4:36 left in the third period.

The Blue Devils used an 11-yard pass and then a lateral that ended in a 22-yard touchdown run to take the lead, before Calhoun rallied in the last two minutes to win the game.

Thirteen senior football players and their parents were recognized before the game: Christian Cottrell, Randy Fluharty, Justin Gerwig, Derrick Hardbarger, Jacob Haught, Quentin Kerby, Preston Milan, Austin Moore, Zach Moore, Ray Phillips, Daniel Sims, Tim Sutro, and Aaron Yoak.

Darrenger Fluharty (12-104) and Randy Fluharty (25-103) led CHS in rushing. Ben Laugh-line (14), Darrenger Fluharty (14), Dillon Mefford (12) and Aaron Yoak (11) led the team in tackles.

Although W.Va. Secondary Schools Activities Commission only announced the ratings of the 16 teams that qualified for the Class A playoffs, Calhoun finished with a rating of 6.2 and probably in 18th place. Gilbert, the 16th ranked team, had a rating of 6.33.
