The Calhoun High School varsity football team fell
to 15th in Class A after losing
to visiting Parkersburg Catholic, 39-29, last Friday night.
Both teams scored in each quarter in a contest that
saw seven lead changes.
After Catholic scored late in the first quarter and
missed the extra point, the Red Devils answered in just four plays.
Zach Moore’s 21-yard pass to Bronson Clark set up
Darrenger Fluharty’s 44-yard run with 1:02 left in the period. Moore’s
kick gave CHS the lead, 7-6.
The two teams traded turnovers, leaving the
Crusaders at the Calhoun 33. A one-yard plunge on the fifth play put the
visitors up, 12-7.
On its next series, the Red Devils used a pair of
pass receptions to set up Cory Metz’s 41-yard touchdown run. CHS was back on top, 13-12, with 3:24 left in the
half.
The defense forced PCHS to punt, but when the
Calhoun offense stalled at its own 48, a bad snap on a punt attempt was
recovered at the CHS 29
with 31 seconds on the clock.
Catholic ran six plays in that time, hitting on a
19-yard field goal to take a 15-13 margin as the horn sounded.
Randy Fluharty turned the game around again to
start the second half. He returned an interception 26 yards to set up
his own TD on the next play from the Catholic 45. He also converted the
two-point conversion to give CHS
a 21-15 lead.
The ensuing onside kickoff was recovered by the
Crusaders at their own 48. Three passes, the last one four yards, plus
the point after, gave the visitors a lead that they would hang on to,
22-21.
Two punts and a lost fumble by Calhoun were
followed up by a field goal and two touchdowns that gave Catholic a
39-21 margin with 1:42 left in the game.
The Red Devils’ final successful drive came
primarily on three completed passes--two to Justin Gerwig of 42- and
15-yards and the final one from Moore to Clark for 15 yards into the
endzone. Randy Fluharty added the two-point conversion for a final score
of 39-29.
