Red Devils travel To Roane;
Game Has Playoff Implications

Calhoun’s football game on Friday night at Roane is important for both teams’ playoff hopes.

As it did last year, CHS moved from 15th to 12th in WVSSAC rankings during its week off.

Last year, the Red Devils finished the season by defeating Roane, Wirt and Braxton before suffering a loss to St. Marys.

Calhoun ended the regular season with a record of 7-3 and finished 10th in Class A. The team lost at Weirton Madonna, 16-0, in the first round of the playoffs.

Coach Doyle Hupp’s team faces a similar situation this year. Once again, CHS is 4-2, and faces the same four teams.

Its next three opponents have improved their records since this point in the season last year.

Class AA Roane is 3-3 and ranked 18th (2-4 last year). Wirt (4-2 and ranked 16th in Class A) and Braxton (4-3 and ranked 17th in Class AA) had losing records at this point last year.

This year’s Calhoun squad is led in rushing by Randy Fluharty with 821 yards on 108 carries. His brother Darrenger has 418 yards on 65 attempts. Randy has 11 touchdowns and 78 points.

Quarterback Zach Moore has thrown for 442 yards on 26-of-56 attempts. He has six TD tosses without an interception.

Receiver Bronson Clark has nine receptions for 229 yards and four touchdowns.

The Calhoun defense is led in tackles by Tim Sutro (59), Aaron Yoak (51) and Cory Metz (45). Justin Gerwig has three interceptions and Sutro has four QB sacks.

Roane County is led in rushing by Nathan Reynolds (116-593); passing, Rhett Atkinson (40-of-70, 434), and receiving, Alex Mace (15-178).

The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
