The Calhoun County High School mat team started the
Roane County Duals by losing its first six individual matches to Wirt
County, and trailed 33-0.
The Red Devils’ next seven wrestlers not only won
against the Tigers, but remained undefeated during the six-team event
that was held Dec. 30.
Six pins and a forfeit gave
CHS
42 points and a final 42-39 victory against eighth-ranked Wirt.
 Caden
Arnold, 215 lbs., took 27 seconds to pin his Wirt County opponent at the
Roane County Duals. The CHS
junior’s win was the deciding points in Calhoun’s victory over the
Tigers, 42-39. Arnold, 17-2, is seventh in the latest
www.wvmat.com Class AA-A rankings.
Fourth-ranked Calhoun also defeated Ravenswood,
72-12; Lincoln, 63-15; fifth-ranked Roane County, 50-24; and Grafton,
66-12.
With 5-0 records for the Red Devils were Cody Clark
(140 lbs.), Zach Hanshaw (145), Ben Laughlin (152), Jared Haught (160),
Aaron Yoak (171), Tim Sutro (189), and Caden Arnold (215).
Clark (19-0) and Yoak (10-0) remained undefeated.
Arnold had five pins, while Yoak and Sutro had four pins and a forfeit
each, and Clark and Haught had three pins and two forfeits each. Each
scored a perfect 30 points.
Levi Gordon (103) and Christian Cottrell (285) were
4-1, Aaron Dawson-Jarvis (135) was 3-2, and Ricky Allen (112) and Austin
Moore (130) were each 2-3.
CHS
gave up eight forfeits in the 119 and 125 lb. classes, and was 50-10 in
all other matches.
 Senior
Christian Cottrell pinned his Roane County heavyweight opponent in the
first period as Calhoun defeated the Raiders, 50-24.
On the season, Cody Clark leads the team in scoring
with 110 points, followed by Jared Haught and Tim Sutro with 105 each.
Sutro has a team-high 15 pins, and Clark, Haught and Caden Arnold have
12 each.
Calhoun will defend its team title in the 40th Pat
Vance Invitational at Nitro High School on Friday at 4:15 p.m. and on
Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Other West Virginia teams include Cabell Midland,
Capital, George Washington, Hurricane, Lewis County, Liberty Harrison,
Lincoln County, Logan, Nitro, Poca, Riverside, St. Albans, Shady Spring,
South Charleston, Spring Valley, Winfield, Woodrow Wilson, and Wyoming.
Also entered are Johnson Central, Lawrence County,
and Sheldon Clark from Kentucky, and Chesapeake from Ohio.
