The Red Devil matmen will host the 30th annual Calhoun County
Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Mt. Zion.
The 11-team field will include at least four of the top 10 Class AA-A
teams in Berkeley Springs, Clay County, Wirt County, and host Calhoun.
Other teams are Braxton County, Fayetteville, Greenbrier West, Oak
Hill, Poca, Ritchie County, and St. Marys.
Wrestling gets underway at 10:30 a.m. Admission is $6 for up to 10
hours of wrestling, including over 200 matches. It will also showcase
more than 30 ranked wrestlers.
Calhoun will be led by seniors Cody Clark, 27-0, 135
lbs., Aaron Yoak, 16-1, 171, and Tim Sutro, 26-3, 189; juniors Ben
Laughlin, 24-1, 152, Caden Arnold, 23-5, 285, and Zach Hanshaw, 15-3,
145; and freshman Jared Haught, 25-2, 160.
Eight place winners, including four champions, did not provide enough
scoring for the CHS
wrestling team to defend its title at Braxton County High School on
Saturday.
Plagued with scoring problems, tournament officials decided to
re-score the tournament to decide if the team champion was Wirt County
or Clay County.
Results of the top five teams were unofficially announced on
www.wvmat.com on Monday
morning. Later, the top eight teams, plus individual place winners in
the 14 weight classes were announced. Even later, the other team scores
were listed, but, as of presstime, Herbert Hoover’s team score was still
missing.
Ben
Laughlin (right) picks the ankle of his Braxton opponent for a takedown
in a hard fought battle in the finals of the 152 lb. class. The
CHS junior won, 7-5. There could be a
rematch in the Calhoun County Invitational on Saturday.
It is believed that Wirt, which had 277 points on Saturday night,
will be declared the winner. According to the re-score, the Tigers had
252.5 points, seven more than Clay.
Tim
Sutro (right) uses a power move to take his Independence High School
opponent to the mat. The senior was 4-0 with four pins and won the 189
lb. individual title.
Calhoun was said to be third (219) and Braxton was fourth (190).
With the top four teams participating on Saturday at Calhoun
Middle/High School in the CCI, the top two trophies may be presented to
Wirt and Clay at that time.
Freshman
Levi Gordon controls a Liberty Raleigh opponent on the way to a 6-2
decision in the consolation semi-finals at Braxton County on Saturday.
Gordon placed fourth.
At Braxton, the Red Devils had championship performances from Cody
Clark (135 lbs.), Ben Laughlin (152), Jared Haught (160) and Tim Sutro
(189). All four had 4-0 records, while Clark and Sutro were perfect with
four pins and 32 points. Laughlin and Haught earned 29 each.
In second was Aaron Yoak (171). Also placing were Levi Gordon (103,
4th), Seth Wease (140, 5th), and Caden Arnold (285, 5th).
Caden
Arnold lifts his larger Clay opponent and takes him to the mat for a
pin. The Red Devil junior placed fifth in the 285 lb. weight class.
Clark was named the most outstanding wrestler by a vote of
participating coaches.
Calhoun notes: Three Red Devil wrestlers are nearing the 100-win
career mark. Tim Sutro (98), Ben Laughlin (95) and Caden Arnold (88) are
nearly ready to join teammates Cody Clark (145) and Aaron Yoak (112) in
reaching the milestone. That would make 30 CHS matmen to reach the century mark.
Clark is only five away from eclipsing the school’s career pin mark
that is currently 102. Sutro has 22 pins this season. The CHS season record is 32.
(Unofficial results: No score found for Herbert Hoover. At one time,
it had 145 points.)
