Led by championship titles by Ben Laughlin (145
lbs.) and Aaron Yoak (160 lbs.), Calhoun won the predominately AAA Pat
Vance Invitational on Saturday at Nitro High School.
Ben Laughlin pinned this Lewis County opponent in the first period
and remained undefeated on the season, 14-0, while winning the 145 lb.
class at the Pat Vance Invitational at Nitro High School.
Laughlin is ranked first in Class AA-A.
Nine wrestlers placed in their respective weight
classes, including eight in the top four.
Laughlin, ranked first by coaches in Class AA-A,
remained undefeated, 14-0.
Yoak, seeded fourth, defeated the top two seeded
wrestlers on his way to finishing 4-0.
Calhoun's other champion at Nitro was Aaron Yoak, who upset
top-seeded George Washington and second-seeded Oak Hill opponents on the
way to the 160 lb. title.
The Red Devils received runner up efforts by Nick
Stevens (112), Cody Clark (130) and Jeremy Conley (152). Stevens had a
win over a second seed and Conley defeated the top seed on their way to
the finals.
Caden Arnold (171) was third, while Austin Moore
(125) and Sean Gungle (135) were fourth. Freshman Harley Hamrick (140)
was sixth.
Gungle, a senior who won his 100th match at Pt.
Pleasant, now has 111 victories during his career. Stevens, a senior who
needs two wins, and Clark, a junior who needs three to reach 100
victories, will have an opportunity to reach that milestone this weekend
at Braxton.
Wrestling begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and at 10 a.m.
on Saturday in the Braxton County Invitational at the Armory off I-79 at
exit 62.
Other teams competing are Grafton, Point Pleasant,
Sissonville, Webster, Herbert Hoover, Richwood, South Harrison, Clay
County, Independence, Petersburg, Roane, St. Albans, Wirt, Fayetteville,
Liberty of Raleigh, Philip Barbour, Shady Spring, St. Marys, Lincoln,
and Greenbrier West. Included are seven of the top 10 Class AA-A teams.
