Calhoun placed six matmen in the top five of their respective weight classes as the team finished third of 42 teams represented at the West Virginia State High School Wrestling Tournament in Huntington last weekend.

Sophomore Ben Laughlin, who finished as one of three undefeated wrestlers in high school this year, completed his 33-0 season with a major decision, 8-0, over Oak Glen’s A.J. Rhodes in the 145 lb. class finals.

145 lb. state wrestling champion Ben Laughlin is shown with his parents, Sharon and Mike Laughlin.

Cody Clark’s two-year run as state champion ended in the 130 lb. semi-finals with a loss to Cameron, 11-8. The junior finished third with a 4-1 record, including four pins.

Senior Sean Gungle placed fourth at 135 lbs. and fellow senior Nick Stevens was fifth at 112.

Also placing fifth for the Red Devils were sophomore Caden Arnold, 171 lbs., and junior Tim Sutro, 189.

Not placing, but scoring points and eligible to return next season for CHS were freshman Harley Hamrick (140 lbs.), sophomore Zach Hanshaw (119), and juniors Jacob Haught (215), Austin Moore (125) and Aaron Yoak (160).

The team also loses Jeremy Conley (152) to graduation.

Laughlin’s title was the 21st for a Red Devil wrestler. The team was 6-0 in duals and 95-4 in tournaments. Clark led the team in wins (37), pins (28) and points scored (262).
