After waiting 38 years for its first Little Kanawha
Conference title, the CHS
wrestling team won its seventh championship in eight years on Saturday
at Williamstown.
The Red Devils placed 12 wrestlers in the top three
of their respective weight classes, while outscoring second place
Williamstown by 37 points, 230 to 193.
It was the most points scored in at least 13 years,
and topped the previous CHS
high of 208 points in 2005.
Calhoun wrestlers won four of six championship
matches and six of seven consolation finals. The 14 starters lost only
12 matches, while winning 37, 22 of those by pin.
Championship efforts came from Cody Clark (130
lbs.), Sean Gungle (135), Ben Laughlin (145) and Aaron Yoak (160). In
second were Austin Moore (125) and Caden Arnold (171).
Earning third place were Nick Stevens (112), Zach
Hanshaw (119), Harley Hamrick (140), Jeremy Conley (152), Tim Sutro
(189) and Jacob Haught (215). Jean Blair (103) was fourth and Christian
Cottrell (285) finished 1-2.
Ben Laughlin remains undefeated (25-0), while Cody
Clark continues to lead the team in wins (28) and points scored (204).
He and Tim Sutro are tied with 20 pins each.
Calhoun was scheduled to wrestle duals at Herbert
Hoover on Thursday at 6 p.m., but the matches were moved up one day. The
number of teams was unknown at presstime.
The Red Devils will participate in the regional
qualifying tournament next week at Pt. Pleasant High School.
