The Calhoun County High School varsity football
team scored three times in the fourth quarter to put away visiting South
Harrison in the annual homecoming game.
Randy Fluharty scored on touchdown runs of 62, 75,
66, 11 and 36 yards to provide the Red Devil offense.
The Calhoun junior’s 329 yards rushing increased
his total to 1,144 on the season.
The
Parkersburg News lists Fluharty as first in the Little Kanawha
Conference in rushing and in scoring (82 points).
According to records compiled by Robert Bonar,
1,144 yards is already good enough for 12th on the school’s all-time
season rushing list--257 yards out of sixth.
Paul Goodrich set the season record with 2,050
yards in 2005. Jimmy White set the rushing record for a game in 1948
with 377 yards.
Calhoun, ranked 15th in Class A, scored on its
first possession against the Hawks.
After stopping the visitors at the 50 to open the
game, Calhoun took over at its own 25.
Coach Doyle Hupp showed confidence in his team’s
rushing ability by going for a first down on 4th-and-inches at the 35.
A three-yard gain to the 38 set up Fluharty’s first
TD. Zach Moore kicked the first of his three extra points.
Although the visitors collected nine first downs in
the half, none came inside the CHS
20 until late in the second quarter.
South Harrison put together a 13-play drive from
its own 30 that was stopped at the one on a 4th-and-goal at the three.
After taking over with 2:37 left in the second
quarter, Calhoun was forced to punt.
The Hawks took over at the 50, but Nick Stevens
picked off an errant pass to end the half.
On the first play from scrimmage in the third
quarter, Flu-harty took a pitch out, broke a tackle near the right
sideline and went 75 yards to help put CHS
in front, 14-0.
South Harrison got both of its scores in a 1:45
span.
A 21-yard interception return to the
CHS
46 gave the Hawks their best field position. On the fifth play, Vince
Miller carried the final 11 yards and SH cut the margin to 14-7 with 44
seconds left in the third.
The Hawks recovered the ensuing kickoff at the
Calhoun 30 and needed a 15-yard penalty and four plays to tie the score.
Dillon Burnside’s three-yard run just 59 seconds
into the fourth quarter helped tie the game, 14-14.
It took Fluharty just one play, this one 66 yards,
to put Calhoun back on top, 21-14.
An interception by Aaron Yoak enabled the Red
Devils to dominate the period, as Fluharty added two more TDs to end the
game with CHS on top, 33-14.
Leading tacklers for Calhoun were Aaron Yoak (15),
Jeremy Conley (13), Danny Slider (13), Tim Sutro (11), Sean Gungle (10),
and Austin Moore (9).
Calhoun is off this week before hosting rival Roane
County on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m.
