The Calhoun County High School and South Harrison
High School varsity football teams have a lot in common.
Both teams are 3-2 and got there in similar
fashion. The Red Devils and the Hawks won their first three games
handily, but have suffered two straight losses.
The teams have three common opponents. CCHS
defeated Gilmer, 58-6, and Doddridge, 41-14, while SHHS won 49-7 over
the Titans and 46-0 over the Bulldogs.
In the past two weeks, the two teams have lost to
Williamstown--37-7 for the Red Devils and 41-8 for the Hawks.
After scoring 136 points in its three wins, Calhoun
has been limited to one touchdown in the past two weeks. South Harrison
totaled 132 points in the wins and one TD in each of its losses.
On paper, it looks to be a very entertaining game
on Friday night at 7:30. The fact that it is the Red Devils’ homecoming
game could be the difference--one way or the other.
Calhoun enters the game with a 14th place rating by
the WVSSAC, while South Harrison is 18th.
In last week’s home loss to Williamstown, the Red
Devils could not get the offense to run smoothly against the state’s
number one Class A team.
Little Kanawha Conference rushing leader Randy
Fluharty was held to nine yards on nine carries in the first half,
before finishing with 91 yards on 20 totes. The rest of the team netted
one yard on 14 plays on the ground.
Meanwhile, the visiting Yellowjackets scored in
each quarter--rushing for 205 yards and passing for 113--while improving
to 5-0.
Fluharty scored Calhoun’s touchdown on a three-yard
plunge. Zach Moore kicked the extra point.
The CHS
defense was led by Jeremy Conley’s 16 tackles. He was followed by
Christian Cottrell (9), Sean Gungle (8) and Nick Stevens (8).
