The Calhoun High School varsity football team’s loss at
St. Marys on Friday ended hopes of hosting a first-round playoff game
for the second straight year.
The Red Devils, ranked 10th in the WVSSAC’s
ratings, will play Madonna High School at Weirton High School’s Jimmy
Carey Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Blue Dons are 10-0 and ranked seventh in Class
A. The team has outscored opponents 455 to 64 during the season.
The Red Devils are 7-3 and have outscored opponents
180-176 through 10 games.
Heading into the last regular season games, the two
teams each had a player ranked among the state’s top 10 scorers.
CHS’s
Randy Fluharty was fifth with 130 points and Madonna’s A. J. Klein was
sixth with 128 points.
To reach Jimmy Carey Stadium, take Rt. 2 North
through Weirton. When you reach the 9th red light, make a left onto
Virginia Ave; go two blocks and make a right towards the stadium.
Against St. Marys last Friday, Calhoun fell behind
14-0 early in the first quarter.
After the Blue Devils added a third score, Red
Devil quarter-back Zach Moore scored on a five-yard run and kicked the
extra point.
St. Marys drove 80-yards in 10 plays to increase
its lead to 26-7 just 37 seconds before halftime.
Randy Fluharty returned the second half kickoff 25
yards and completed the drive as he went 69 yards on the first play from
scrimmage.
St. Marys added three touchdowns over the last two
quarters for a 47-13 win.
Fluharty continued his successful season by rushing
for 230 yards on 33 carries.
The junior broke the school record for rushing
during the regular season by accumulating 1,978 yards on 243 carries.
Paul Goodrich set the 10-game record in 2005 with
1,964 yards. He set the 11-game record the same year with 2,050 yards on
270 carries.
Fluharty led the Little Kanawha Conference in
rushing and scoring (136).
