Calhoun’s hopes of winning its first playoff game
in school history were ended by Madonna High School in Weirton last
Saturday night, 16-0.
The Red Devils are now 0-4 in the playoffs,
including first- round losses in three of the past four years.
Both teams’ defenses played well in the first half,
but the CHS offense could not take advantage of three Blue
Dons’ turnovers in the first two quarters.
Calhoun picked up two first downs on its first
possession of the game, but had to punt from the Madonna 40.
The Red Devils’ Tim Sutro recovered at the 13 when
the Blue Dons mishandled the kick.
A handoff to junior Randy Fluharty lost two yards,
and CHS was called for a 15-yard offensive facemask
penalty, resulting in officials calling it a loss of down.
Two running plays gained six yards, but an
incomplete pass ended possession at the 24.
An exchange of fumbles and four punts later,
Madonna had possession at its own 17, and drove to the Red Devil 24 in
seven plays.
Zach Moore intercepted a 3rd-and-15 pass at the
Calhoun six just before the half ended.
Madonna held CHS
to three and out on the first series of the second half, and took over
at the Calhoun 47.
Despite a pair of 10-yard penalties against the
Blue Dons, the home team used two completed passes to gain a first down
at the CHS 13. On the third play, A.J. Klein carried in
from the five. A two-point conversion made the score 8-0 with 5:39 left
in the third quarter.
The two defenses again kept the other team in check
until late in the game.
A CHS
punt from its own 46 resulted in a 54 yard return and a first down at
the Calhoun 32 with 4:20 left.
It took eight plays, but Klein scored from the six.
Max Nogay’s second successful conversion left Madonna on top, 16-0, with
2:14 left.
Quarterback Zach Moore completed two of four passes
on the final CHS series.
Fluharty had 69 yards on 23 carries, as the team
was held to 95 yards rushing and 23 yards passing.
Leading tacklers were Danny Slider (14), Jeremy
Conley (13), Aaron Yoak (11), and Tim Sutro (10).
Calhoun finished another successful season with a
record of 7-4. Madonna is now 11-0 and travels to Pocahontas County in
the next round of the playoffs.
Final season statistics will be published next
week.
