The CHS
varsity football team suffered its first loss of the season, 14-0,
against Parkersburg Catholic last Saturday night.
Two touchdowns by the Crusaders in the first
quarter were all the host team needed, as the Calhoun offense could not
penetrate the end zone.
All of the first quarter was played on the Red
Devils half of the field.
Catholic recovered its own onside kick at the CHS 41 to open the game, but the Calhoun defense
forced a punt from the 45.
The Red Devils picked up a first down at their own
23, but on second down, PC recovered a fumble at the 30.
Five rushing plays set up the Crusaders’ first
score from the three. A successful kick put the team up 7-0 with 4:43
left in the first period.
Calhoun fell on the ensuing kickoff at its 19, but
a second down pass completion resulted in another fumble recovery for
Catholic at the 16.
A gain of one yard was followed by a 10-yard
penalty, leaving the football at the 25 from where PC scored again. The
successful PAT, the last point of the game, came with 2:55 remaining in
the first quarter.
Calhoun returned the next kickoff to its own 20 and
began a 16-play drive that took almost nine minutes off the clock.
A 21-yard pick up by quarterback Zach Moore and 11
yards by Jeremy Conley helped CHS
move into Catholic territory on the first play of the second period.
Highlighted by a 13-yard pass completion to Daniel
Slider, Calhoun moved to a 1st-and-goal at the seven. Randy Fluharty
netted a yard on two carries and two incompletions ended the threat at
the six.
The Red Devils made it to the PC eight with 11
seconds left until halftime, but could not produce a score.
A pair of 40-yard field goal misses by Catholic was
as close as either team came to scoring until halfway through the fourth
quarter.
A 32-yard gain by Fluharty helped move the team to
the 16, but a third down pass was inter-cepted in the end zone.
Neither team threatened again as the Crusaders
dropped Calhoun (3-1) to an 11th place ranking in Class A, while PC
(2-1) moved up to 13th.
Randy Fluharty led the
CHS
offense with 94 yards on 21 carries.
Fluharty and Jeremy Conley had 10 tackles each for
the Red Devils, followed by Tim Sutro with eight. Aaron Yoak recovered a
fumble and Christian Cottrell recorded a quarterback sack.
Calhoun will host No. 1 ranked Williamstown (3-0)
on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
