attempt to strip the football while tackling a Doddridge runner.
With its third straight win to open the season, the
Calhoun varsity football team is ranked sixth in Class A in the W.Va.
Secondary Schools Activities Commission’s initial rankings.
The Red Devils play ninth-ranked Parkersburg
Catholic (2-1) on Saturday,
7:30 p.m., at Stadium Field, Parkersburg.
Last Friday night, in the team’s first home game,
Calhoun took advantage of three Doddridge miscues on the Bulldogs first
three possessions to help post a 41-14 victory.
CHS
opened the game with an eight-play, 63-yard drive. Randy Fluharty
carried six times for 58 yards, including the last three for his sixth
touchdown of the season.
The junior leads the Little Kanawha Conference with
630 yards on 66 carries.
The visitors’ first possession ended with a fumble
that was recovered by Daniel Sims at the seven. Two totes by Jeremy
Conley and Fluharty’s two-point conversion put Calhoun on top 14-0.
Daniel Slider intercepted an Bulldog screen pass
and returned it six yards to the 29 on Doddridge’s second custody of the
ball. On the next play, Fluharty scored to give
CHS
a 20-0 lead with 2:48 left in the opening period.
Two plays into the second quarter, a bad snap on a
planned punt lost 19 yards, and Calhoun took over at the Bulldog 30.
After a 1st-and-goal at the two, Conley scored
again and Zach Moore’s first successful kick left the Red Devils ahead,
27-0.
After the ensuing 24-yard kickoff return, Doddridge
used a successful 62-yard pass com-pletion to set up a 1st-and-goal at
the eight. The team scored on a 4th-and-4 tipped pass in the end zone.
Moore scored for Calhoun on the last two series of
the first half on runs of three and 39 yards. He kicked both of the
extra points as CHS finished its scoring and led 41-14 at half-time.
The Red Devil reserves took over in the second half
and the Bulldogs went to their aerial attack, completing 8-of-16 passes,
but scoring only once--an 11-yard pass in the fourth quarter for a final
of 41-14.
Randy Fluharty finished with 186 yards on 13
carries and Zach Moore had 42 yards on two TD runs. Reserve backs Daniel
Sims (53) and Darrenger Fluharty (32) added another 85 yards. The team
did not attempt a pass.
The defense was led in tackles
by Tim Sutro (10), Aaron Yoak (9), Ray Phillips (8), and Chris Mace (7).
Yoak also had a quarterback sack.
