Randy Fluharty follows the block of Jeremy Conley
against the Gilmer Titans last Friday. Fluharty netted 235 yards rushing
in the 56-6 win.
Last year, Calhoun jumped out to a 37-point first
quarter lead against Gilmer, and the Red Devils’ starting backfield
ended up with only eight carries on the night.
In that contest, Gilmer fumbled nine times in the
first half, leading to a 67-0 halftime deficit. It finished the 73-0
loss with zero pass completions
and four interceptions in 11 attempts.
This year’s Titan team gave
CHS
a much better battle.
Just before halftime, Gilmer only trailed 24-6, but
quarterback Zach Moore’s 1-yard sneak and his ensuing extra point kick
with one minute left gave the Red Devils a 31-6 lead.
Defensive back Aaron Yoak’s 62-yard interception
return for a score put the game away on the opening play of the fourth
quarter as CHS went in front, 44-6.
Randy Fluharty, who scored Calhoun’s first two
touchdowns on runs of 11 and nine yards, could become the team’s sixth
1000-yard rusher in seven years.
The CHS
junior carried 19 times for 235 yards. Eight of those carries resulted
in half of the team’s 16 first downs.
Other Calhoun scores came from Jeremy Conley (two)
and Sean Gungle, with reserve back Darrenger Fluharty scoring twice in
the fourth quarter. Cory Metz added a two-point conver-sion.
Gilmer County, which came out passing, finished
12-of-31 for 124 yards. Two bad punt snaps helped the Calhoun defense
limit its opponent to a minus-49 yards on the ground.
The Red Devil defense was led in tackles by Danny
Slider with nine, and Randy Fluharty, Aaron Yoak and Caden Arnold with
six each.
Calhoun will play Ritchie County at Ellenboro on
Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Game Note:
It was an anniversary of sorts for CHS
head coach Doyle Hupp. The former Red Devil running back opened his
senior season in 1978 by scoring the first-ever touchdown at Glenville
State College’s football stadium on Mineral Road. Gilmer County High
School played the initial game at the brand new stadium that Friday
night 30 years ago.
