The Calhoun High School varsity football team
qualified for the Class A football playoffs for the third time in four
years by defeating visiting Braxton, 46-13, last Friday night.
To finish in the top eight and host a home game for
the second straight year, the Red Devils must defeat the Blue Devils in
St. Marys on Friday night.
Against Braxton, Randy Fluharty continued to lead
the offense as he rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns. The junior
leads the Little Kanawha Conference with 1,748 yards and 130 points.
Fullback Jeremy Conley opened the scoring with a
38-yard run. Fluharty’s touchdowns came in the second and third quarters
and gave CHS a 26-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Although the Braxton offense rushed 25 times and
completed 12 passes through three periods, it did not penetrate the
Calhoun 40 until the last play of the third quarter.
The two teams combined for five touchdowns in the
final 12 minutes.
After the visitors scored on a 15-yard touchdown
pass, quar-terback Zach Moore tallied from seven yards out.
Calhoun defensive back Nick Stevens lined up in the
offensive backfield and scored from three yards out on his first carry
of the season to help increase the score to 40-7 with 3:49 left.
The Eagles completed three more passes on their
next series and scored a 16-yard TD.
Two plays later, CHS
reserve back Austin Moore ended the scoring with a 57-yard run and a
46-13 final.
Conley, a senior, had his best rushing game of the
season with 92 yards on nine carries, as CHS
totaled 413 yards on 44 carries.
