After an impressive effort against visiting Ritchie
County, the CHS football
team plays on the road for the first time on Friday night.
Calhoun will attempt to begin the season with a 3-0
record for the sixth straight year when it travels to West Union to take
on Doddridge County.
The only time the team did not begin 3-0 since 2000
was in 2003 when it suffered a 21-20 loss at Doddridge. It was also the
only time during that span that the Red Devils have had a losing record.
Calhoun has a 27-30-5 record against the Bulldogs
since the series began in 1933.
Except for fumbles, it was another good night for
the CHS offense against Ritchie.
Randy Fluharty followed up his 253-yard/5 touchdown
effort in the opening game with 255 yards and three TDs. The rushing
efforts rank 12th and 13th on the school’s all-time individual game
efforts.
Fluharty was already in third place (329 yards) and
eighth place (264 yards) in the record book with efforts during his
junior year.
Fluharty’s first score against the visiting Rebels
came on the Red Devils’ second possession. He opened the drive with
consecutive carries of 13 and 37 yards to set up a two-yard plunge with
:19 left in the opening period.
Tim Sutro’s fumble recovery at the Ritchie 20 set
up a second score by Fluharty from one yard out with :32 remaining until
halftime.
Zach Moore, who missed the extra point kick after
the first score, connected with Darrenger Fluharty for the two-point
conversion and a 14-0 lead.
The Fluharty brothers opened the second half with
seven straight carries for 42 yards to set up Moore’s 20-yard TD pass to
Bronson Clark. The extra point kick failed, but Calhoun led 20-0 just
4:04 into the quarter.
Ritchie answered quickly, utilizing its longest two
plays of the game--passes of 23 and 38-yards--to set up a four-yard run.
A conversion pass cut the deficit to 20-8 at 5:35.
CHS
turned the football over on a fumble two plays later, but the defense
held, and Moore blocked a punt as Calhoun took over at the Ritchie 35.
Fluharty scored his third six-pointer from 10 yards
out on the first play of the final period. This time, it was Dillon
Mefford who caught Moore’s two-point conversion pass for a 28-8 lead.
With 5:37 left, Sutro blocked a punt and the Red
Devils had possession at the Rebel 17.
A pair of penalties left Calhoun at the 28, but
Moore found Aaron Yoak in the back of the endzone, and added the extra
point kick for a final score of 35-8.
The Calhoun defense held the Rebels to a net of 61
yards on 39 rushing attempts and 76 yards on 4-of-14 passing.
Tim Sutro (13) and Cory Metz (12) led CHS in tackles. Sutro, Justin Yeager and Caden
Arnold had quarterback sacks.
