The world is run by the people who show up.
Recently, a Calhoun
resident “showed up” at the Chronicle office with an idea that would
serve our readers, but would also serve new, younger minds. The column
that was once an idea has now come to life, created and offered
voluntarily by someone who wants to make a difference in the lives of
young Calhounians.
It is with the utmost pleasure that we
introduce a new column entitled, “Bright Ideas.” Starting this week, The
Calhoun Chronicle will include a section with puzzles, trivia, jokes and
educational features--all brought together for us by
Lisa Sheldon of Creston. Although mostly designed and
created for the younger generation, I believe many adults will learn
from it as well.
Sheldon has years of experience in
early education. Before moving to West Virginia,
she served as director for an early learning center in
North Carolina. She also home-schooled her two
sons for several years, and now that they are enrolled at Pleasant Hill
Elementary, she visits the school each week to read to the students.
Lisa
recently received her Regent’s degree from
West Virginia University
with an emphasis in psychology. In addition to this new column, she has
developed a summer reading program for Calhoun County Library. If her
name sounds familiar, readers may recall when we published
Lisa’s children’s book, “Mommy, Why?” for Christmas
season in 2003.
Each week, Bright Ideas will include
activities for both young and old. Sections of the column will include:
Activity Alley, Knowing Home, Library Lookout, Silly Shots, Chatting
with Dr. Chad,
Tooth Talk, and more.
The launch of her column coincides with
Newspapers in Education Week, and teachers are welcome to invite her to
visit students in class. Students are encouraged to contact her via The
Calhoun Chronicle with column suggestions and input.
We welcome Lisa to our correspondent
staff, and hope our readers will join us in celebrating her initiative,
talents, and service to the younger Calhoun community. |
