| “Just for Women” and those who care
about them!
This is Breast Cancer Awareness month and also the
month of my birthday, so my gift to myself is a health screening and
mammogram. “I am worth it!”
I had a concern that because mammograms are not
available in Grantsville that there might be a tendency to put off
getting checked because, “It is not convenient at this time.”
I decided to tell you exactly how to make the
arrangements. I did it myself last week, so this is first hand
knowledge.
Call Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, 354-9244, and
make an appointment for an annual health screening. The appointment will
be at the annex building, located at the former Minnie Hamilton clinic.
The office staff there will help determine eligibility
for any free programs. Many clients will meet the requirements. The
staff is knowledgeable about the guidelines for different programs that
are available.
You will be examined by a qualified health care
professional. There are female personnel available for this service. You
will receive a pelvic exam, clinical breast exam, breast self exam
training, and a Pap smear during your appointment. A referral for a
mammogram is also provided, usually in Parkersburg, Charleston, Spencer,
or any site of patient’s choice.
There is also assistance available for those who need
transportation to the mammogram appointment.
The personnel at the health center are very caring.
Patients are made to feel special. Screenings are private and
confidential.
I have been a part of the Breast Cancer Clinical Trial
Program for over 10 years. This care is an obsession for me. My mother,
three sisters, and at least two maternal aunts all died of breast
cancer. This is something I can do for my descendants. Knowledge is one
of the most important weapons against this disease.
Don’t stick your head in the sand! Be informed about
your own health!
