AMERICAN CREED
William Tyler Page
1918
I believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by
the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of
the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign nation of many sovereign
States; a perfect union, one and inseparable, established upon those principles
of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots
sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my Country to love it: to support its
Constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its Flag; and to defend it against
all enemies.
This creed was the award winning entry in a contest to sum up in 100 words
the basic principles of American political faith. It is not just the words of
one man, but a summary of ideas from great documents and great leaders.
Read again these words . . . “A government . . . whose just powers are
derived from the consent of the governed . . .”. The power of our government,
whether it be town council, county commission, school board or other forms of
government, is only bestowed because we vote for them as our representatives.
Also, if we refuse to vote, we are not accepting our right as an American and a
Christian.
Know your candidates, know their qualifications and experience. Will they
represent your ideas and values? We must care. Don’t just sit there! Prepare to
vote!
Election Day in Grantsville is Tuesday, June 7.
