Can you believe that the Wood Festival is 48 years old?
For something to exist and improve over the years is
good news for Calhoun County.
Even though the Wood Festival doesn’t officially open
until Thursday, the town is buzzing with activity. May was clean up
month in Grantsville. Organizations, businesses, volunteers . . . all
took part in beautifying the town under the leadership of the Town
Improvement Committee. Flowers were planted, the town triangle had the
landscaping renovated, and residents were encouraged to get rid of junk
on their properties.
Now, the Wood Festival is moving in. Food booths are
opening and other booths are being set up. Loud speaker systems are
being tested, windows decorated, parking spaces filled, and restaurants
are full at lunch time.
More activities are added each year. Check out the
schedule in this paper and remember to thank the festival committee and
other participants. They work year round and also manage Wayne Underwood
Field. These people are all volunteers. No one is paid. The weeks before
the festival, they are in town early and late, seven days a week. Be
generous with your praise this week. They deserve it . . . and remember
to thank the “retired” Wood Festival volunteers as you see them, now
enjoying it from the sidelines. It started with them!
Plans are in the making even now for the 50th
celebration in 2012. Volunteers will be needed to make this a historical
event. The following song was written by Karen Yoak and Ronald Joe Wilt
and performed by the Wood Festival Chorus in 1963.
Come, come, come
To the Wood Festival
Cause it’s fun, fun, fun
At the Wood Festival
There’ll be singing
and dancing
And majorettes prancing
To tunes that we love to hear.
So, let’s come, come, come
To the Wood Festival
Cause it’s fun, fun, fun
At the Wood Festival
You could soon fall in love
Becoming part of--
The Calhoun County Wood Festival
Aprons and bonnets are found
On ev’ry lady in town
Men in bow ties making eyes
At ladies with pies and
goodies for sale.
So, let’s
(repeat first 2 verses).
