Nothing to do in Calhoun County? Try Grantsville, the
county seat, this week!
Even though the Wood Festival doesn’t officially open
until Thursday, the town is buzzing with activity. Saturday was clean up
day, so trash is at a minimum and flowers have been planted by
businesses. Some food booths are open, and other booths are being set
up. Loud speaker systems are being tested, windows decorated, parking
spaces filled, and restaurants are full at lunch time.
More activities are added each year. Check out the
schedule in this paper and remember to thank the festival committee and
other participants. They work year round and also manage Wayne Underwood
Field. These people are all volunteers. No one is paid. The weeks before
the festival, they are in town early and late, seven days a week. Be
generous with your praise this week. They deserve it . . . and remember
to thank the “retired” Wood Festival volunteers as you see them now
enjoying it from the sidelines.
It started with them!
The following song was written by Karen Yoak and Joe
Wilt and performed by the Wood Festival Chorus in the ’60s.
Come, come, come
To the Wood Festival
Cause it’s fun, fun, fun
At the Wood Festival
There’ll be singing and dancing
And majorettes prancing
To tunes that we love to hear.
So, let’s come, come, come
To the Wood Festival
Cause its fun, fun, fun
At the Wood Festival
You could soon fall in love
Becoming part of . . .
The Calhoun County Wood Festival
Aprons and bonnets are found
On ev’ry lady in town
Men in bow ties making eyes
At ladies with pies and goodies
For sale. So, let’s (back to the beginning).
