Calhoun County and West Virginia is becoming a favorite
destination for visiting relatives in our family!
Two weeks ago, my nephew, Jim Hart and his family of
nine, were visiting at Canaan and had been there 30 minutes when a
cousin asked if I had brought a Calhoun Chronicle with me. I had two
copies and they began to read, especially the real estate listings, and
then moved on to the news and each columnist. They are from a busy area
in Virginia, but like the idea of a less hectic life, with more time for
their families.
Several went skiing and, in the evenings, we had some
lively Gin Rummy games. A Sunday trip to Blackwater Falls commenced with
worship service at the lodge, followed by a brunch in the dining room
that included selections pleasing to children and adults. Their heart’s
desire for the next West Virginia trip is to visit the land of the
Calhoun Chronicle.
Last weekend, Sarah and Todd arrived about midnight with
six young people, who spread sleeping bags out on the living room floor
to get a little rest before starting their farm life.
Sally, Levi and Will (from Ohio) joined them on Saturday
morning for a hearty breakfast prepared by Tom Brinkley and Todd. They
were all outside the remainder of the day, helping with farm work,
cleaning the barn, feeding cattle and horses, going to the river, and
riding four-wheelers over the hills.
Three of the older ones went to cheer for the
Mountaineer basketball team on Saturday evening. Even though they got
home in the early hours of morning, all were up in time for church.
After lunch, they packed in a few more hours of riding the horses and
four-wheelers It was a tired van load of North Carolinians who finally
loaded up for the trip home, but assuring us that they would be back.
I am telling you about this because these groups will
return! Jim Hart wants to bring his group to Grantsville to experience
country living and Calhoun friendship. The Rhodes’ family usually has a
list of friends who want to come. Then there is the group from Dudley
Shoals Baptist Church who don’t wait for an invitation. They just come!
Tom Brinkley is spending several weeks here while he is
between jobs. He has met many of you from all sections of the county and
feels like this is a special place. Thank you, Calhouners, for your
friendship.
