The following selection was sent to me by a friend who is a doctor. It has been a help to me when life seems to be heavy on my shoulders. Thought you all might like it too.

“One day a farmer’s donkey fell down in a well. The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to find a solution. He finally decided that the animal was old and that the well needed to be filled in, so it wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited his neighbors to come to his farm and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to scoop dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and sobbed uncontrollably. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing! He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake each addition off and take another step up. Finally, with the last shovel full, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off.

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick is to use each shovel full as a stepping stone. We can overcome the biggest problems just by not stopping, never giving up. Just shake them off and take a step up.”
