I was reading a newspaper dated Saturday, Oct. 20,
2007, from New Orleans. That was the day of the first election for
governor since Hurricane Katrina. The prediction was that at least half
of the registered voters would turn out. It is not a presidential
election year, but much is at stake in Louisiana.
Our next election is Tuesday, May 13, 2008. What
will you do? This gives us 194 days to know what and who we are voting
for. We can start now to prepare our minds. A single vote has been known
to change an election. This month, we will also be honoring our armed
services, active and retired. Remember, they are protecting our right to
vote.
What are we teaching our children? I heard of a
young mother who took her kindergartner into the booth with her as she
voted. The child was jokingly asked as she exited the booth, “Did you
vote?” The child answered, “Yes, but don’t ask me who I voted for. It’s
a secret who we vote for in America!”
The mom smiled as she told me, “This is how we
teach the next generation. We are preparing them to be responsible
citizens.”
Make a commitment to help preserve this nation. Be
a responsible citizen. Make the 194 days count, be ready to vote!
