BURROWS MEMORIAL - October 26, 2006
Calhoun County has good news! The Coleman
and Katheryn Burrows Memorial Fund has been awarded a grant
for $25,000 from Sisters of St. Joseph’s Charitable Fund to
be put toward the purchase of mammography equipment.
Do you know what this means to our county?
It was just a year ago that I was making the trips to
Charleston for mammograms, but I did not have to take time
off from my job, find baby sitters, and arrange for
transportation.
In Calhoun County, the occurrence is approximately 21%
lower than the U.S. rate, but deaths from breast cancer are
more than 79% higher than the U.S. rate. When asked why our
citizens are not getting screened, the majority answered it
was because of fear of the unknown and/or the distance they
would need to drive to get a mammogram.
By having mammography equipment readily available in the
county, we can provide further education and screening to
the women of Calhoun County, and, hopefully, drastically
reduce the number of deaths related to breast cancer.
Through various fundraisers and grant opportunities, the
members of the Coleman and Katheryn Burrows Memorial Fund
committee need to raise $108,000 to purchase the equipment.
With this grant, the fund contains $28,000. This leaves
$80,000 to raise through various fundraisers and grants. The
professionals will do their part to locate grants and the
committee is dedicated and will plan fundraisers, but the
public is also needed.
Community organizations and other individuals can plan
fundraisers, such as a hoagie sale, craft fair or car wash,
or sell your skills to raise money. Even saving just pennies
can help. Please keep this cause foremost in your minds
during the next few months. All ages can help.
In the meantime, have your mammograms! Help is available,
but you must make your needs known. You are the only one who
can safeguard your health. Call today for a screening. The
number at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center is 354-9244.
The Coleman and Katheryn Burrows Memorial Fund account
has been established at Calhoun Banks and donations can be
made there or mailed to Barb McKown, c/o MHHCC, 186 Hospital
Drive, Grantsville, WV 26147. Thank you for your support!
