Spring is on the way--just 25 more days and it will
finally be with us.
People of Calhoun County will be looking for green
places to walk, ride bikes, have picnics, take children to playgrounds,
attend historical events, and more.
We have a hidden treasure in Calhoun County Park,
located at Mt. Zion. The walking trails, used each day, go through the
woods and meadows, over hills and hollows. They are used by people of
all ages.
Different types of entertainment will be available
during the upcoming season. There will be bluegrass music, living
history presentations, gun show, tours of Heritage Village, youth
softball, and stargazing.
Picnic areas are available for impromptu gatherings
or can be rented for family gatherings. A camping area will be opening
this year, with eight campsites for rent. Primitive campsites will also
be available.
The Herb Smith Community Building has an upstairs
area with stage and lighting, tables, chairs, and plenty of floor space.
The downstairs features a large handicap accessible area with tables and
chairs, and kitchen and restrooms.
Heritage Village will be open for weekly tours or
by appointment. It is under the auspices of Calhoun Historical Society
and contains structures that have been moved in from various sections of
the county. There is a post office, store, school, blacksmith shop and
home. Tours can be arranged for individual groups.
More information will follow each week of March.
During this time of budget cuts and downsizing, residents are needed to
help with donations, grants and volunteer labor.
Park board meetings are held the first Thursday of
each month at 7 p.m. and are open to the public.
Plan to use the Calhoun County Park services and
attend the events this summer, and keep it on the map for our
descendants.
