When I resigned from teaching, my husband, Carl,
was obsessed with the idea that I learn to use the computer. He bought
me one for my birthday and then went back to his recliner and TV!
I signed us both up for a computer class at
Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center and he was there each time as “support” for
me. The last night of the class, we were asked to leave our evaluation
on the computer. Carl simply said, “Computers, Bah, and Humbug!”
Even though I can barely turn on the TV, it was an
obsession to learn to use the computer. It was very slow progress, but I
had capable teachers along the way, including those from the career
center, some grandchildren, our editor, and the technician. Last
weekend, I could even talk about a “pixel” to my family.
In the early days, I would call my grandson, Lucas,
whenever I had a problem. After trying to help me long distance one
time, he said, “Turn it off. Just turn it off and don’t touch it until I
come in!”
The story below has been sent to me at least six
times by computer, and I have to laugh each time it comes in. Yes, to
the uninitiated, there are worms, viruses, recycle bins, files, etc.
“The computer swallowed grandma.
Yes, honestly it’s true!
She pressed ‘control’ and ‘enter’
And disappeared from view.
It devoured her completely;
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I’ve searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I’ve even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Jeeves
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found ‘online.’
So, if inside your ‘Inbox,’
My Grandma you should see,
Please ‘Copy, Scan and Paste’ her
And send her back to me.”
This is a
tribute to all the grandparents who have been fearless and . . . learned
to use the computer. Don’t give up, it is fun!
