Are you registered to vote in the upcoming
election? Mark Apr. 22 on your calendar. This is the last day to
register to vote in the Primary election.
There are only four requirements for you to have
this privilege:
--You must be a U.S. citizen and reside in West
Virginia.
--You must not be deemed “mentally incompetent” by
the court.
--You must not be under felony (including treason
and election bribery) conviction, probation, or parole.
--You must be age 18 or older (You may vote at age
17 in the primary, if you will turn 18 before the General election on
Nov. 4.)
West Virginia’s Primary election will be held on
May 13, the second Tuesday in May, as required by state law. Voters will
have the opportunity to cast their vote on a full slate of candidates,
including presidential, at that time.
This year, Republicans and Democrats each chose to
select some or all of their delegates to their national conventions
through a state convention. While the Republican state convention was
held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Democratic convention will be held on June
13-14. The Mountain Party will hold a convention in July to select its
nominees for governor and president.
For the first time, independent voters and voters
who marked “no party affiliation” on their voter registration form will
be able to vote Republican, Democrat, or Mountain Party in the primary,
May 13. These voters must ask for the Republican, Democrat or Mountain
Party ballot when casting their vote.
Citizens can register to vote by visiting the
county clerk or going to www.wvvotes.com to download a voter
registration form.
If you are not registered, you do have 72 days to
exercise this right, but time will slip by quickly. Make sure that the
voice of Calhoun County is recognized on May 13.
