VFW Post 5959 and Ladies Auxiliary hosted the 10th
annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Arnoldsburg
Community Building.
Speaker Del. David Walker said, “There are two people
who will die for you. Jesus Christ, who dies for your sins, and the
American soldier, who dies for your freedom . . . Honor them with your
memories and your time.”
VFW Post and Ladies Auxiliary have honored veterans
through their 10 years of hosting this celebration.
Other speakers were state representative for Ladies
Auxiliary Donna Bodkins, and District 5 past commander Jim Horner.
DAV van drivers from January to August were recognized:
Robert Yoak, who logged 560 hours, 13,295 miles, and transported 127
patients; Adrian Ball, 40 hours, 624 miles, eight patients; and Burl
Simers, 260 hours, 4,056 miles, 46 patients transported. Paul and Freda
Whytsell, van coordinators, logged 181 hours.
The following VFW officers were recognized: Albert
Tanner, commander; Jimmy Dale Yeager, senior vice commander; Victor
Whytsell, junior vice commander; Stan Norman, quartermaster; Paul
Whytsell, service officer; Bob Yoak, chaplain; Adrian Ball, Roger Yoak,
and Charles Snyder, trustees.
Ladies Auxiliary officers are Frances Tanner, president;
Francie Adwell, senior vice president; Linda Staton, junior vice
president; Freda Whytsell, secretary; Tina Whytsell, treasurer; Marie
Hays, guard; Ernestine Ball, conductress; Patty Wyatt, chaplain; Freda
Whytsell, Lee Miller and Kim Marcou, trustees.
Paul Cottrell and High Mountain Bluegrass performed.
Veterans attending were residents of Calhoun and
neighboring counties.
