It is summer fishing time and I took advantage of
two days off last week to catch a 21-inch smallmouth and a 40-inch
muskie. For the smallmouth, I went to Sandstone Falls, near Hinton in
Summers County, about 30 minutes south of Beckley. It is a 15-foot high
river-wide waterfall on the New River, and is easily one of the most
beautiful areas in a state known for its beauty.
Sandstone Falls is located on the New River near Hinton,W.Va.
I used a one-man pontoon boat to paddle basically
under the falls. The bass fishing was fantastic. Giant carp smacked the
surface, but lazily swam away when my bait would pass by them. I landed
around 35 fish, including the citation smallmouth.
Sandstone Falls is easily reachable from Calhoun
County and is highly suggested as a place for trophy fish. For anyone
looking for a one-day getaway, I couldn’t recommend a better place to
fish.
