The 2011 hunting season is bringing many changes.
Bag limits for deer are more conservative and many seasons come in
earlier. Hopefully, this counteracts the downward spiral of last year’s
harvest totals.
Squirrel season opens Sept. 10. Many other states
have earlier squirrel opening. Hunters are questioning the opening due
to warbles in squirrels. It is my understanding that warbles are a skin
disease and squirrels containing warbles can still be consumed. I, like
many others, do not want to consume a squirrel with warbles.
Archery season for deer opens Oct. 1, but bear
archery season still comes in on Oct. 15. The early archery and
muzzleloader seasons are not for Calhoun, which has a one doe with a
rifle limit this year.
Calhoun’s bear season runs from Dec. 5-31, without
the use of dogs. Calhoun has had roughly 10 bears taken within the last
decade.
I am looking forward to the best hunting season in
years. Please get out and enjoy God’s bounty this fall. If possible,
take a child hunting.
